Any card-carry gay man knows his Evita- whether it be Patti Lupone (Broadway), Elaine Paige (West End), or Madonna (Film). But getting to learn more about what made Eva Perón Evita was a real treat.
Born María Eva Duarte on May 7, 1919, in Los Toldos, Argentina, Eva Perón rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most influential figures in Argentine history. She moved to Buenos Aires at the age of 15 to pursue a career in acting, where she met Colonel Juan Perón. They married in 1945, and when Juan Perón became President in 1946, Eva, affectionately known as "Evita," became the First Lady. She played a significant role in her husband's administration, advocating for labor rights and social welfare. Eva founded the Eva Perón Foundation, which provided extensive aid to the poor and was instrumental in improving healthcare and education in Argentina.
Eva Perón was also a fervent advocate for women's rights. She championed women's suffrage in Argentina, which was achieved in 1947, and founded the Female Peronist Party, the first large-scale female political party in the country. Through her foundation, she established homes for women and children in need, providing them with shelter, education, and healthcare. Eva's dedication to social justice and her efforts to uplift women and the working class left a lasting legacy in Argentina, making her a revered figure even after her untimely death from cancer at the age of 33 in 1952.
It was great fun to visit her former home, which she eventually opened up to be one of the homes for women and children in need. We were joined by Michael's friend Cathy, and her lovely traveling companion Lori (not pictured).
*Please note: Michael did a really good job of highlighting other Evitas than the true, real Evita, Patti Lupone.
